For some, wielding a curling iron to create a new ‘do is challenge enough. Bob Recine, on the other hand, creates veritable sculptures of hair—not to mention wood, metal, fabric, found objects, and much more.

Barneys New York tapped Recine, a hairstylist and visual artist, to collaborate on a remarkable window display celebrating the 60th anniversary of Chloé. Five iconic creations by former Chloé designer Karl Lagerfeld are installed along Madison Avenue—but it’s not just the dresses that take center stage. “[Barneys New York Creative Director] Dennis Freedman understood very clearly that I view this not as a window, but as an installation,” Recine said of the project. “We translated hair into something that has nothing to do with hair. It’s always my starting and inspiration point to create something explosive and interesting, and something for people to stop and stare and look at.”

If the crowds along Madison Avenue were any indication, mission accomplished. Check out the video below to hear more from Recine and see the making of the Chloé anniversary display.
