As the festive season approaches we see more and more memorable adverts arrive on our screens to show off what the big retailers have to offer. We’ve rounded up the best Christmas ads of 2019, from John Lewis to Ikea. So grab a cuppa, dunk a biccie and enjoy.
Sainsbury’s UK – Nicholas the Sweep
Sainsbury’s has given Father Christmas a Dickensian origin story in a festive advert that aims to remind viewers of its 150-year history at the heart of the British high street.
M&S – Go Jumpers for Christmas!
Of course, the chicest of all the ads has to be M&S, who have gone a bit Kenzo this year focusing on Jumpers, with some nice knitwear in some joyful dance sequences – set to House of Pain’s “Jump Around”, appropriate to most households this season.
M&S FOOD – This Is Not Just Food
M&S have also released a food lovers ad latching onto the trend of street market style food to show their Christmas range.
Argos Christmas 2019 – The Book of Dreams
Argos renames the catalogue ‘The Book of Dreams’ as a dad’s childhood dreams are awoken when he sees the drumkit his daughter has circled.
Asda – Let’s Make Christmas Extra Special
Meanwhile, supermarket Asda also goes down the child actor route with their “Let’s Make Christmas Extra Special” ad, which sees one girl and her brother deliver some festive magic to their neighbourhood – with fantastical results and some beloved Yuletide cliches.
Orange – Got Him
Orange is launching its new Christmas campaign with Publicis Conseil Paris around its star offer, the “Connected House” and a theme worthy of our childhood dreams: for the first time, we will be able to capture the real Santa Claus when he comes to the house… in shops or on the street.
John Lewis – #ExcitableEdgar
John Lewis is counting on an excitable baby dragon called Edgar to put some heat under sales this Christmas in its first joint festive ad with its sister chain Waitrose.
The department store chain’s festive campaign – which costs about £7m a year – has become one of the media events of the year, generating millions of views on social media.
Heathrow –
Waiting…waiting…waiting… (nothing new there)
Manor – For a Christmas gift you won’t forget
Manor and its agency BETC Digital Paris, has released another touching Christmas ad, “The Guardians”. This year’s film captures the festive spirit as Elfred and his team are faced with new challenges.
Dicks Sporting Goods – The New Kid
A new Nike Air Max 270 React has arrived at DICK’S Sporting Goods. But its first overnight turns out to be anything but a silent night. When the sun goes down, the fun heats up. And the store comes alive as “The New Kid” embarks on an epic journey of discovery and play, meeting new friends along the way. It’s all fun and games in this night at the store, until morning shows up and tries to crash the party.
Lidl – Christmas Elves
This Christmas, the Lidl Elves are absolutely everywhere! Dad Nick, Mum Holly, and their seven-year-old twins, Eddie and Eve, have sprung to life and decided to experience for themselves the wonder, excitement and joy of Christmas.
Boots – #GiftLikeYouGetThem
High street regular Boots have also launched a chatty new campaign with Bootiques by Boots with the hashtag #GiftLikeYouGetThem, which highlights some very modern issues that are faced when buying gifts at Christmas, with one person in the funny video saying “Why is gifting so problematic?”
Boots make clear they offer diverse shopping this Christmas.
TK Maxx – Gift Different
The off-price retailer’s energetic campaign is fronted by a retro daredevil gifter, appropriately named “TK”, who is on a mission to switch off his standard shopping habits and do something a little different this year.
TK Maxx’s Christmas message features the festive voice of Love, Actually star Bill Nighy while Kerry Shale narrates the journey and delivers the daredevil’s tongue in cheek monologue.
Walkers – All Mariah Carey wants this Christmas
Can you get more Christmassy than Mariah Carey? Probably not. Besides, seeing Mariah deliver her classic All I Want For Christmas Is You whilst taking the tiniest nibble of Walkers crisps is instantly flawless. We just wish Gary Lineker made it in the ad.
Debenhams
Debenhams is taking on John Lewis by sneaking out their Christmas TV ad just days before their rival – recruiting X factor star Fleur East with her new single.
Visa Christmas Ad 2019 – #WhereYouShopMatters
Show your High Street some love! Visa’s Christmas ad features real shopkeepers and encourages you to support High Street retail because #WhereYouShopMatters.
Ikea – Silence the critics
I love this debut into the Christmas ad scene by Ikea. It’s so fresh, so, well un-christmassy, and feels like Nike ‘I’m a Londoner’ met ALDI ‘Good. Different’.. Pure awesomeness.
Amazon – Someone to love
It’s the time of year to get together. And the Amazon boxes are back singing with everybody who’s in the festive spirit.
Iceland – #Magicoffrozen

Aldi UK – Let me entertain you
Meanwhile, everyone’s favourite price-friendly supermarket has the most family-friendly advert which shows a carrot facing mob-attack from a gang of sprouts before managing to break out into song, delivering “Let Me Entertain You” by Robbie Williams, as it is surrounded by all the Christmas dinner trimmings.
ALDI Australia -The Miracle Ham
Myer AUS – Christmas is where we are
Myer taps into bluetooth technology again for its ‘Christmas is where we are’ campaign accompanied by a fun and interactive new product, the Myer Global Positioning Stocking.
Big W – Every day’s a big day.
