If you’ve ever stood in front of a full wardrobe thinking “I have nothing to wear,” what you probably mean is: I don’t know how to style what I already own.

That’s the problem Gensmo is tackling with an AI powered fashion agent that helps people mix and match their existing clothes and visualise new outfits.

Users create a digital avatar and use the platform’s virtual try on feature to see outfit combinations in real time. The system uses deep learning, computer vision and style preference algorithms to generate personalised outfit ideas and mood boards.

Importantly, it starts with what’s already in your wardrobe. But if an outfit needs an extra piece, the platform connects users to e commerce sites and independent boutiques to complete the look.

A Shift From Shopping to Styling

What’s interesting here is the shift in how fashion retail works.

Instead of starting with products, tools like this start with outfits and styling inspiration. Shopping then becomes the natural next step.

For retailers, this creates a far more useful experience. Instead of endless scrolling, customers get curated outfit ideas based on what they already own and what suits their style.

An Idea That’s Been Coming For A While

Interestingly, this is something I explored conceptually back in 2021 while working on an idea for Westfield.

The idea was simple: what if a shopping centre app could act as your stylist? Take a photo of someone on the street or upload an image you’ve seen on social media, and the system suggests outfits, then shows you which stores stock the pieces you’re looking for.

At the time the technology wasn’t quite there. But platforms like Gensmo show how quickly AI is catching up.

Why Retailers Should Pay Attention

AI styling tools like this could fundamentally change how people discover fashion.

Instead of searching for products, shoppers will increasingly be shown complete looks tailored to them. And when something is missing, the technology can point them directly to where to buy it.

For fashion retail, that means moving beyond selling products to helping customers style what they wear.
